FAQ
What is Cryotherapy?
Cryotherapy is the use of cold temperatures to stimulate a natural response from the body so promoting quicker recovery from exercise, injury and pain.
Is This the Same as an Ice Bath?
No. The use of ice in recovery has been used for years. However with this procedure 20 minutes are spent immersed in a ‘wet’ environment at temperatures of 8-10C. This causes muscles and tissue to ‘freeze’ and is extremely painful. The ice bath causes muscle stiffness after procedure, which then take some time to return to normal.
How Does Cryotherapy work?
Unlike conventional cold treatments, a Cryotherapy chamber envelopes the body in super cooled air to temperatures as low as -120C. The brain is ‘tricked’ into reacting to the cooled surrounding, by reducing blood flow to the extremities, increasing oxygen, endorphins, enzymes, nutrients and anti-inflammatory substances in the blood. Once out of the chamber blood rushes back, warming up the body but also bringing all the positive chemicals that help the body recover and repair much quicker and alleviate pain. The body is left feeling energised.
Will I Freeze?
No. You would expect at temperatures of -120C thoughts turn to freezing. As treatments last for 3 minutes, skin temperature drops by 10-15C to around 5C. Although you will feel cold the sensation is not unpleasant.
Should You I Have Treatment Pre or Post Exercise?
Both. As Cryotherapy produces many beneficial responses within the body it is ideal both pre and post exercise. The benefits of treatment realised post exercise are equally relevant pre exercise. Increased levels of oxygen, anti-inflammatory substances and nutrients etc allow athletes to train harder and for longer.
How Many Treatments Do I Need?
We rarely advise just a single treatment, however with some localised treatments this may be sufficient. For athletes, treatments are an on-going process and form part of their training and gameplay regime. Others may require an initial course followed by maintenance treatments. Every individual is different and the appropriate advise will be given on consultation?
Is Cryotherapy Safe?
Cryotherapy is performed by trained therapists, and procedures are monitored at all times. At Cryotherapy North East we use the latest technology within our chamber. The device uses super cooled air that allows for complete immersion of the body within the chamber. Unlike other chambers that use liquid nitrogen vapour where the head has to remain out of the chamber to prevent suffocation.
We take safety extremely seriously and have partnered with only the best within the industry. We have teamed up with CryoAction Ltd, suppliers to Leicester City Football Club during their premiership title year and now to many clubs in the Premier and Championship Leagues, International Rugby, and many other elite sports.
What is the Difference Between a Direct and Non-Direct Cryotherapy Chamber?
Direct and Non-Direct refers to the use of liquid nitrogen within the chamber. We have taken great care to provide a chamber that provides enhanced safety features and therefore only use the non-direct feature. This means we do not expose our clients to liquid nitrogen vapour within the WholeBody Cryochamber.
Can Only Adults Use a Cryotherapy Chamber?
Cryotherapy can be used for under 18’s. We would require parental consent prior to treatment.
I have heard Cryotherapy Causes Weight Loss?
One of the reactions to the extremely cold temperature in which the body is surrounded is firstly to preserve heat and then try to warm the body up as quickly as possible. There are two responses, shivering and non-shivering. The non-shivering response is where the body ‘burns’ white fat cells to produce energy and therefore heat. The body ‘burns’ around 500-800 calories per session, this ‘burn’ continues post session.
